Mine X
Diamonds have been found in some of Earth's oldest rocks, dating back to 4.3 billion years ago. The diamonds that we see at the surface are ones then that are brought to the surface by a very deep-seated volcanic eruption. It's a very special kind of eruption, thought to be quite violent, that occurred a long time ago in the Earth's history. We haven't seen such eruptions in recent times. They were probably at a time when the earth was hotter, and that's probably why those eruptions were more deeply rooted. These eruptions then carried the already-formed diamonds from the upper mantle to the surface of the Earth. When the eruption reached the surface it built up a mound of volcanic material that eventually cooled, and the diamonds are contained within that. These are the so-called Kimberlites that are typically the sources of many of the world's mined diamonds.
Rough Classification X
Diamonds come in big lots of thousands of carat from the miner. On the receipt, every rough diamond has to be individually checked and evaluated based on its size, color, inclusions, etc. The rough assort expert with decades of experience does this pouring his heart on getting the best possible result from that rough diamond. The data of the source of the rough and Kimberly process certificate if entered & saved into a system and every diamond is assigned a unique identification number.
Planning of a Diamond X
Shape of a rough diamond is uneven and contains various types of inclusion. To get a sparkling diamond from an included rough diamond, it requires to be architected by an experienced and talented Artisan. It takes years and decades of experience to determine what an unclear rough diamond might yield. Various technological advancement has made the process easily precise and hence this gives a 3 dimensional view of the rough diamond with the best polish diamond possibility from it. The expert helps the machine to identify the position, size and the type of inclusion and then selects the best plan to cut the diamond. The unique identification number is carried on till the end of the entire polishing process.
Laser Cutting X
After the planning of a diamond via various technologies, a diamond has to be cut in to various pieces according to the plan. The laser cutting expert get the detail of the plan on a computer. Diamond being the hardest substance on the earth needs Laser to be cut. So a diamond is mounted on a diamond holder with plaster of Paris kind of material to hold it. After mounting the diamond according the marking on it, it is placed in the laser cutting machine from where the laser cut the diamond. It takes up to 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the size of the rough diamond to cut it.Every piece cut from main rough diamond gets a sub unique identification number.
Polishing (Faceting) X
This is the most important process in diamond polishing. Post the laser cutting, rounding and windowing; the polishing artisan has a clear picture of the inclusion and predetermined shape of the diamond. He then initiates the faceting on the diamond. The facets are so tiny that only a 10x or 14x magnification can help the artisan view them. Diamonds are faceted on a polishing wheel rotating at a speed of 3600 RPM. This metal wheel rubs off the unwanted rough diamond to powder. Hence it’s a tough job to know the amount of time & pressure to be applied on a diamond as the hardness of every diamond is different. A layman could never imagine the level of precision that goes into this process. Machines can also facet the diamonds but it takes a human brain and art to create an extra ordinary from arough diamond.
Polish QC X
The polishing artisans have done their part now. The diamond graders or polish QC artisans evaluates the diamond based on their knowledge of the 4cs and beyond. Around 60 parameters are checked by the artisans and then given the grade of a particular diamond. They also check for the changes and polish remnants left on a diamond while faceting. If the diamond requires further polishing they send it back to the polishing artisans and if no further improvements are required, they give it a final grade. All polishing diamond are compared to a set of master diamonds to be graded accurately.
Certification X
Diamonds are polished and graded around the world by different companies. The gemological laboratories authenticate these grades based on their own standards. The labs use high magnification instruments and test to determine that a diamond is of a said quality and also check for any treatment on it. Authentication gives confidence and peace of mind to consumers in purchasing.
